Annual Report on English Language Training in Ireland

Annual Report

2024

Ireland’s English Language Sector Welcomes 128,000 Students, Contributes €792M to Irish Economy.

English Education Ireland has today released the Annual Report on English Language Training in Ireland 2024, revealing that the English Language Education (ELE) sector welcomed 128,761 international students last year, delivering a direct economic impact of €792 million.

The research, conducted with market intelligence firm BONARD, provides the most comprehensive picture to date of Ireland’s English language training sector, drawing on data from 60 accredited providers across the country.

CEO of English Education Ireland, Lorcan O’Connor Lloyd, noted:

“This report demonstrates the ongoing strength and value of the English Language Education sector in Ireland. The €792 million figure reflects only the direct economic impact—tuition, accommodation, and immediate spend—but the true value is far greater. International students boost local economies, support tourism and public transport, and enrich Ireland’s social and cultural life.”
— Lorcan O’Connor Lloyd

The report comes at a time of growing international competition. While global student mobility has rebounded, destinations such as Dubai and the Philippines are attracting more learners due to lower costs and faster visa processes. Ireland’s ability to maintain its appeal will rely on stable immigration policies and a supportive regulatory environment.

The report was launched today at a stakeholder event in Dublin, with support from headline sponsor LanguageCert.

““We are proud to support this report and the work of English Education Ireland,” said Lucy Horsefield, Director for the UK and Ireland at LanguageCert. “This data reinforces the importance of the sector—not just economically, but socially and culturally—for Ireland.””
