Children First Child Protection Training

According to the Children First: National Guidance for the Protection and Welfare of Children and the Children First Act 2015, school staff working with minors or vulnerable persons in a significant capacity due to their role within an organisation must complete Children First Child Protection training. English Education Ireland members can participate in Children First Child Protection training days delivered by Barnardos. There are two levels of training: Level 1 for all staff dealing with minors and Level 2, which is required for Designated Liason Persons (DLP). See course overview and outcomes here You must complete the Level 1 course before participating in the Level 2 DLP training. Persons who do not intend to progress to Level 2 DLP training with Barnardos could opt for the free training programme through TUSLA.

Course Background

Children First 2017 states clearly that child protection is everyone’s responsibility. This training is suitable for anyone working directly with children and young people. This aim ofthis training is to equip participants with the skills and knowledge that are necessary to deal with child protection issues in line with Children First 2017 guidelines, Children First Act 2015 and the Child Care Act 1991.

Course Content

This training is delivered as 1 full day. The workshop will involve presentation, videos and question & answers. Participants receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Outcomes Level 1

Following the workshop participants will be able to:

Recognise their legal responsibilities

in relation to Child Protection

Explain the definitions of abuse

Identify the signs and indicators of

abuse and neglect

Describe how to respond to a

disclosure

Identify the main elements of the:

- Child protection & welfare report form

- Retrospective abuse report form

Outcomes Level 2 (DLP)

Recognise their legal responsibilities in relation to child protection

Recognise the signs and symptoms of abuse

Explain the role of the designated liaison person in supporting staff and managing child protection situations

Demonstrate how to speak with parents

effectively when child protection concerns arise

Describe how to deal with allegations of abuse against staff members

Identify best practice in relation to child protection recording and reporting

State organisational responsibilities re; child safeguarding

Learning Outcomes

This fire warden course trains participants to deal with fire on an emergency basis. It emphasises the dangers of fire, the importance of prevention, and the necessity of urgent action when fire breaks out.

This Course is Designed For

Personnel wishing to become fire wardens or fire marshals in the workplace.

Training Methodology

Courses are highly interactive with role-playing and practical exercises to reinforce understanding and learning.
