Building a Greener Future for International Education

As an industry rooted in global mobility, we understand the environmental impact of international travel and the responsibility that comes with it.

That’s why we are working to embed sustainability across all aspects of our sector—from operational practices to advocacy and partnerships.

Green Standard Schools Collaboration

Green Standard Schools, a global initiative promoting environmental best practices in the field of international education. Both organisations are united by a shared commitment to enhancing environmental standards and building a culture of sustainability within our sector.

We are delighted that several member schools have already begun the process of implementing the 12 Principles set out by Green Standard Schools, with more expected to follow. These principles encourage practical, measurable steps toward reducing environmental impact in areas such as waste management, energy use, and student engagement.

Participating schools include:

Reforest Nation Partnership

Since 2024, English Education Ireland has proudly partnered with Reforest Nation to support environmental sustainability through the planting of native Irish trees. We plant trees on behalf of all our member schools and conference attendees as part of our effort to reduce the sector’s carbon footprint.

This partnership reflects our understanding that the ELE sector, which relies heavily on air travel, must actively contribute to climate solutions. Through reforestation, we aim to:

  • Offset carbon emissions
  • Support biodiversity
  • Promote long-term environmental resilience

Each tree planted represents a step towards a more sustainable and socially responsible international education community.

We envision a future where international education not only connects cultures but also contributes positively to the environment.

Sustainability is not just an add-on—it’s a core part of how we operate, advocate, and lead. Join us as we build a more responsible, resilient, and greener ELE sector in Ireland.
